London

Recruiting in London means accessing one of Europe’s deepest and most internationally connected talent markets. As a global hub for financial services, technology, fintech, professional services, life sciences, media, and multinational headquarters, the city offers an exceptionally diverse talent pool across Go-To-Market, Strategy, and commercial leadership roles.

Success in London requires navigating a highly competitive and candidate-aware market, where experienced professionals often have access to opportunities across both established companies and fast-growing businesses. Compensation expectations can be significantly higher than elsewhere in the UK, particularly for senior commercial and specialist roles. Strong employer positioning, accurate London-specific salary benchmarking, targeted candidate networks, and an efficient hiring process are key to securing talent that can succeed in this fast-moving market.

Avomind actively supports clients hiring across the UK, with a strong focus on London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham. These cities represent some of the country’s most important business and talent hubs, with established ecosystems across technology, financial services, professional services, life sciences, industrials, consumer goods, and digital businesses. Across these markets, we partner with companies to build high-performing Go-To-Market, Strategy, and leadership teams.

If your business is based in another UK city or region, we’re equally well positioned to support you. Our reach extends nationwide, from established commercial centres to growing technology and innovation ecosystems such as Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Leeds, and Glasgow. Wherever your growth takes you in the UK, we adapt our search to the local talent market, industry landscape, and specific requirements of each role.

How quickly, and transparently, do recruitment partners actually engage?

In this article, we analyzed 100 firms and found that while many respond within a day, only a minority combine speed with clear, upfront communication.

For companies hiring in The Netherlands, where trust and credibility are key, this matters. Delays or lack of transparency can quickly impact candidate and client perception in a smaller, relationship-driven market.

At Avomind, this is exactly where we focus. Especially in markets like The Netherlands, where precision and trust matter, we believe recruitment should be fast, transparent, and tailored from the very first interaction.

Common Challenges when Hiring in the UK

01

A larger candidate pool doesn’t always mean easier hiring

The UK labour market has cooled considerably. Vacancies fell to around 707,000 in May–July 2026, 10.3% below their pre-pandemic level, while there were approximately 2.5 unemployed people for every vacancy.

For employers, however, greater candidate availability does not automatically solve specialist hiring needs.

Go-To-Market, technical, and leadership searches can still require very specific combinations of industry expertise, customer networks, and experience scaling within the UK.

The challenge is increasingly about identifying the right talent within a larger candidate market, rather than simply generating applications.

02

Brexit changed the international talent equation

The UK can no longer be approached in the same way as an EU hiring market. EU nationals who do not already have the relevant UK immigration status may require a visa just like other international candidates.

For companies recruiting internationally, this means checking right-to-work and sponsorship requirements much earlier in the hiring process. Employers using the Skilled Worker route generally need to be approved sponsors, and the candidate must meet occupation and salary requirements.

This can significantly affect searches where the strongest candidate pool extends beyond people who already have unrestricted UK working rights.

03

London salary benchmarks don’t represent the whole UK

Compensation varies considerably across the UK, particularly between London and regional talent markets.

A senior commercial role based in London may require a very different package from an equivalent position in Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, or another regional hub. At the same time, remote and hybrid working have made geographic salary benchmarking more complicated, as candidates may compare opportunities beyond their immediate city.

For international companies, using a single “UK salary benchmark” can therefore be misleading. Compensation should reflect the role, location, sector, working model, and specific candidate market being targeted.

04

Employer costs have become a bigger part of hiring decisions

UK employers need to budget beyond headline salary when calculating the true cost of a hire.

This has become particularly relevant following changes to employer National Insurance contributions, alongside pension contributions and other employment costs. The ONS reported in August 2026 that feedback from its Vacancy Survey suggested some small businesses were holding back recruitment because of higher labour costs and other operating expenses.

For companies building their first UK team, understanding the total cost of employment before establishing salary bands and headcount plans can prevent significant differences between initial hiring budgets and actual costs.

05

The best talent depends heavily on where you search

The UK has several highly developed but distinct regional talent ecosystems. London dominates areas such as financial services, fintech, professional services, and international headquarters; Manchester has strong technology, digital, media, and e-commerce talent; Edinburgh has deep financial services and fintech expertise; and Birmingham has particularly strong industrial, engineering, automotive, and professional services networks.

This means concentrating every search in London can increase compensation requirements while overlooking relevant talent elsewhere.

For international companies entering the UK, defining whether a role genuinely needs to be London-based, or whether another UK talent hub could provide a better fit, is an important part of the hiring strategy.
